The “Gets Us” Meter
Josh Thornton
We have all heard it before. Hell, most of us Browns fans have probably said it at one point or another. It’s the barometer that gives us unsubstantiated hope for the potential, limitless success of a coach or player. It’s the benchmark we have used to help us forget about the Hue Jacksons and Corey Colemans that have littered our past. He “gets us”. Sound familiar?
If you take a stroll down memory lane I’m sure you will run across a time or two where you can remember a specific person say or do something that made you think this. Most recently, Fred was able to woo us with catchy slogans like “If you don’t wear brown and orange, you don’t matter”. We all remember the “Hue is here baby” one liner from Mr. 1 and 31. Here is one more to drive the point home, on draft night in 2014 Johnny Manziel sent a text message to the Browns then QB coach Dowell Loggins and said “Let’s wreck this league”. Yeah, we lapped that shit up faster than cold beer on a hot day. Those 3 examples are just a few of the hundreds. Nobody has the time, or emotional fortitude, to spend drudging up those nightmares. So I’ll leave it at those 3 and get on with my point.
We have a history of using the “gets us” meter. All too often really. So, how accurate is this barometer when it comes to future professional success? Well, it’s….not. At all. Zero. Actually, if we ever find ourselves uttering that phrase again, we should run for the hills. Pack it in and try again.
I don’t need to feel like I can drink a beer and relate with you Mr. Coach or Mr. Player. I need to feel like you will win on Sundays.
I threw out my “gets us” meter. It’s for the best.
You might want to do the same. Go Browns!
